They gather pebbles, leaves and other found things; they find stories and weave it all into something new. Weaving together the seen and the felt is the starting point that connects their artistic practice. In scratching, painting and etching, the body of the works takes shape and enters into dialogue within a shared space.
At the heart of the exhibition is a collaborative work in which both artistic positions overlap for a set period of time and enter into symbiosis. It begins with a performance at the opening; over the course of the exhibition, the works created during the performance are integrated into the show.

„This exhibition brings together two artists whose practices are rooted in the tradition of etching but have developed their own distinct visual languages. Through the process of drawing into metal, biting, inking, and pressing, both Donna Volta Newmen and Erika Richter explore how the etched line can express different atmospheres and temperaments. Newmen’s imagery drifts between human, botanical, and mythic forms and is charged with an immediate intimacy. Richter, on the other hand, turns her gaze toward the geological and elemental, tracing time and erosion across the surface of the plate. The delicate portrait line of Newmen and the cratered rock surface of Richter show how the same etched process can yield entirely different worlds and how aquatint’s tonal fields might speak of leaf canopy in one case, of sediment in another. Both emerge from a similar manual, meditative practice that is grounded in the tradition of printmaking but also reimagines its possibilities.“

Die Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen erwirbt jedes Jahr zahlreiche Werke zeitgenössischer Kunst und unterstützt damit Künstlerinnen und Künstler an wichtigen Punkten ihrer Karriere. In diesem Jahr sind die Kunstankäufe der Kulturstiftung zum zweiten Mal in Chemnitz zu Gast und geben einen vielseitigen Einblick in das aktuelle Kunstschaffen in Sachsen. Nach der öffentlichen Präsentation gehen die mit Mitteln des Sächsischen Landtags angekauften Werke in den Kunstfonds der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden über.
