Two-faced

2025, NEUE BRÜCKE, two faced 1,2 &3
Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf

The term face, as used in climbing and
mountaineering, refers to the front or steep vertical
surface of a rock wall. These rock faces are often
known for their strong character and difficulty. In the
paintings, the term is used in a new way: the face is
the painted image of an abstract rock wall.
The four paintings stand at eye level and face the
viewer. Each work has two sides: a “face” and a back
side.
The back side of each painting is a single-color
surface. It creates a visual and conceptual contrast to
the face. While the face suggests a specific shape and
structure, the back side focuses on color, tone, and
atmosphere. Iit offers an inward-looking perspective
and occupies the space in the same way as the images
of the rock faces.
